Orbital Cycling Festival at Goodwood Motor Circuit

26th to 28th July 2013

This is a must for 2013! - is proud to support the Orbital Cycling Festival to be held at Goodwood Motor circuit.

This coming July, on the weekend following the finish of the 100th Tour de France, will see the very first Orbital Cycling Festival, hosted at the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit, near Chichester. The festival will be a celebration of all things pedal powered with attractions and events for riders of all ages, abilities and disciplines. The Paddock Expo will sit right next to the race track and provide distraction from the racing by means of the latest bikes, apparel, parts and accessories. There will be camping for all on the same dedicated site used for the Festival of Speed. Food and drink will be delivered by an on-site cycling cafe and from the Goodwood caterers using local organic produce.

With a comprehensive race schedule running from Friday evening's Road Race to Sunday afternoon's family rides you'll be forgiven for never leaving the track side, but there will also be a many other attractions to watch and be part of.

The Animal Bike Tour will be the headline act located right in the centre of the Paddock Expo and delivering their super slick trials riding and tricks throughout the weekend, featuring trails legend Martyn Ashton and rising star, Blake Samson. A demo track will be located right in the middle of the action for everyone to try out the latest bikes and kit. Matti Hemmings will be bringing his flatland BMX skills and also doing workshops for kids looking to learn some new moves. If you look close enough you might even find some roller racing too..... And the organisers have promised that more attractions will be added as the event grows in the next few months.

Families, Kids and Para-cycling

Orbital Festival - GoodwoodAppreciating that many cycling events are enjoyable for some members of the family but not others, the organisers have designed the Orbital Cycling Festival with something to do for everyone. There will be balance bikes for the under-5's and the kids will be totally safe and contained in an inflatable play track. Stepping up the age groups to 6 to 10 year old's, there will be Go-Ride training delivered by qualified coaches. Disabled riders and para-cyclists will feel completely at home in the all-inclusive riding environment at Orbital Cycling Festival and will be encouraged to join in with the fun. Priority parking for the disabled, or riders in recovery, is offered right next to the race track.

If bicycle racing is not for you, there will be family rides around the Goodwood Motor Circuit on both Saturday and Sunday. When the cross racing is not taking place you'll be able to take a relaxed amble around the safe, traffic free perimeter track with its selection of viewing platforms and picnic sites.  Of course you can ride around the Goodwood Estate and explore the South Downs National Park too. Chichester town is only 3 miles away and offers a great mix of high street shops and smaller boutiques. The lovely beaches of The Witterings and Bracklesham Bay are just 1o miles away too . Or why not indulge yourself with a treatment at the Goodwood Health Club? And don't forget your 9 iron if golf is your thing - the Goodwood golf course is only 5 minutes away.

Orbital Cycling event at GoodwoodWhatever your ability or experience, whether your bike is a £10,000 carbon race weapon or a £100 Gumtree bargain, everyone is welcome to have a go at racing on a safe closed road circuit - all you need is some air in your tyres and a helmet on your head. There will be racing events to suit riders of all ages - Youth to Veteran - and all abilities, from complete novices to Olympic champions. Who knows, perhaps the next Chris Hoy will be discovered at the Orbital Cycling Festival. The Orbital Cycling Festival camping site is just a a few hundred yards from the Goodwood Motor Circuit and is the ideal place to pitch your tent or park up your camper van for the weekend. After a relaxed breakfast you can ride to the circuit and watch the early bird racers and enjoy the rest of the day in two wheeled heaven. With up to 600 pitches available there is capacity for around 3000 people to enjoy the eating, drinking and socialising in the great outdoors of the West Sussex countryside. The organisers expect the camping option to be very popular and encourage interested parties to register as soon as possible once the entries go live in late January 2013. On-site toilets and hot showers will be provided plus 24 hour security.

3-days of Cycling Action

Take the day off, or leave work early on Friday 26th July and head down to the Orbital Cycling Festival. The Paddock Expo, cafe and caterers will be open from 4pm, as will the race track for free practice. At 5pm the racing starts with the Youth Road Race..... And the attractions will be in full flow too with the Animal Bike Tour and Matti Hemmings showing off their skills on Friday evening. First on the track on Saturday morning will be the slippery Time Trailists aiming for a personal best over 20kms.... And so the action will continue until the prize giving on Sunday afternoon.

The Goodwood Motor Circuit

Goodwood Motor Circuit is a historic motor racing venue for both cars and motorbikes. The 2.4 mile (3.84 KM) circuit is situated 3 miles from Chichester in West Sussex on the estate of Goodwood House and completely encircles the Chichester Aerodrome, home to the Goodwood Aero Club. In recent years the circuit has hosted the Goodwoood Gallops run by the Surrey Cycle Racing League and the Action Medical Research | RIDE 24.

The racing circuit began life as the perimeter track of RAF Westhampnett airfield, which was constructed during World War II as a relief runway for nearby RAF Tangmere. The first race meeting took place on the 18th September 1948 and later became famous for its 9 hour endurance races and the Tourist Trophy race held throughout the 50’s and 60’s. The same cars are, today, invited back to compete at the Goodwood Revival festival every September, celebrating the golden days of motorsport at Goodwood Motor Circuit, with all competitors and most visitors dressed in period clothing. In 2012, 138,000 people visited Goodwood Revival over 3 days.

You can keep up to date with the Orbital Cycling Festival at  Entries will open soon, so keep checking the site.
